UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING A SOIL TEST PIT
Presentation Summary: Topics include how to describe soil horizons, soil color, redoximorphic features, soil textures, soil consistence, soil structure, geomorphic descriptions, and soil taxonomy at the soil series level. Participants will learn about the basics of soil profile development and its application for soil interpretations.
Presenter: Jim Gove, CSS, CWS, CPSC, CPESC – President of Gove Environmental Services, Inc.
Presenter BIO: Jim has been working in the field of soil and wetland science for over 35 years. For 10 years he was a soil scientist, first with the Rockingham County Conservation District and then with the USDA Soil Conservation Service. He has authored or co-authored several publications, including the “Soil Survey of Rockingham County” (USDA – Soil Conservation Service), “High Intensity Soil Maps in New Hampshire, Standards and Origins” (SSSNNE Special Publication No. 1), and “The Creation and Application of High Intensity Soil Surveys, The New Hampshire Experience” (Soil Survey Horizons, Volume 48, No. 4). He is also a contributor to “Field Indicators for Identifying Hydric Soils in New England”. He is the current Vice President of the Society of Soil Scientists of Northern New England and has been a member of the New England Hydric Soils Technical Committee since its formation in 1992. He was Chair and Vice-Chair of the NH Board of Natural Scientists, President of the NH Assn. of Wetland Scientists, an expert before the NH Legislature, and member of the Ad-Hoc Committee for Soil-based Lot Sizing and member of NHDES Ad-Hoc Committees on a variety of issues. His particular areas of expertise include wetland delineation procedures, wetland impact permitting, wetland mitigation and restoration, site specific soil surveys, hydric soil assessments, and soil profile analysis.
